Every LEGO Chess Set Ever Released

Author : Alexander Mar 20,2025

LEGO's iconic interlocking brick, patented in 1958, surprisingly didn't lead to an official LEGO chess set until 2005—almost 50 years later! This fact, even for a dedicated LEGO enthusiast, was a revelation. The delay seems puzzling; a LEGO chess set appears a natural, marketable extension, easily appealing to a broad audience. However, LEGO's primary market in 2005 was children. Adult-focused marketing didn't become prominent until 2007, and the concept of integrating LEGO builds into broader lifestyle branding only truly took off around 2020. What we readily accept in 2025 was groundbreaking in 2005, and completely unheard of in previous decades when LEGO builds largely consisted of miniature playsets rather than realistic representations.

Below is a chronological list of every LEGO Chess Set ever produced—twelve in total, with only one currently available for purchase in 2025. For additional chess set options, check out our guide to the best overall chess sets.

**Release Date:** 2008
**Piece Count:** 2292
**Dimensions:** 22.5 inches long, 25 inches wide
**Price:** $199.99
Still the largest and most elaborate LEGO chess set ever created, this set significantly exceeded its predecessors. The two-foot square board included four miniature builds representing the skeleton, troll, dwarf, and castle realms. The board's smooth, non-studded surface enhanced its elegant appearance, and the pieces were exceptionally detailed; bishops were wizards, knights were mounted minifigures, and rooks were fortified siege towers.
