Following significant player backlash, Fortnite has reinstated the unlockable Matte Black style for the Master Chief skin. Epic Games reversed its initial decision to remove the style, ensuring its continued availability.
The Master Chief skin's return in December 2024, during Fortnite's Winterfest event, was initially met with excitement. However, the subsequent announcement on December 23rd that the Matte Black style would be removed sparked considerable controversy within the community. This was a reversal of a previous statement guaranteeing unlockability for Xbox Series X/S players who purchased the skin. The initial announcement in 2020 stated the style could be unlocked at any time after purchase.
This reversal caused widespread outrage, with some players citing potential FTC violations. This concern stemmed from the FTC's recent $72 million refund to Fortnite players due to "dark patterns" employed by Epic Games. The dissatisfaction extended to both new and existing Master Chief skin owners, as the change affected everyone.
The Master Chief skin's return isn't the only recent controversy surrounding Fortnite skins. The reintroduction of the Renegade Raider skin also caused a stir, with some veteran players threatening to abandon the game. Currently, some players are requesting an "OG" style for those who purchased the Master Chief skin at launch, though Epic Games seems unlikely to implement this. While the Matte Black style issue has been resolved, the controversy highlights ongoing sensitivity surrounding skin availability and perceived fairness within the Fortnite community.
