NieR: Automata's Permadeath Mechanic: How to Recover Your Lost Items and XP
NieR: Automata's unforgiving rogue-like elements can significantly hinder your progress if you die at the wrong moment. Death isn't just a setback; it can result in the permanent loss of valuable items and upgrades, especially in the late game. However, there's a chance to mitigate these losses. This guide explains what happens upon death and how to recover your lost possessions.
The Consequences of Death in NieR: Automata
Dying in NieR: Automata means losing all XP earned since your last save. More critically, you'll lose all currently equipped Plug-in Chips. While you can always find replacements, some chips are rare and expensive to upgrade, making their loss a substantial blow. Respawning leaves your equipped chip slots empty, requiring you to re-equip or select a preset.
The lost Plug-in Chips aren't gone forever. You have one chance to retrieve them. Failure to recover your body before dying again results in the permanent loss of those chips.
Recovering Your Body: A Race Against Time
After respawning, your priority is recovering your body. A blue body icon appears on your map, indicating its location. Interacting with your body restores all your lost Plug-in Chips. You then face a crucial choice:
Repair: This option doesn't restore lost XP, but your former body becomes an AI companion, assisting you until it's destroyed.
Retrieve: This option restores your lost XP earned since your last save.
Regardless of your choice, you can re-equip your recovered Plug-in Chips, overwriting your current setup, or simply add them back to your inventory.
