Nintendo Japan eShop Bans Foreign Credit Cards and PayPal
Nintendo's Japanese eShop and My Nintendo Store have implemented a new policy, effective March 25, 2025, prohibiting the use of foreign-issued credit cards and PayPal accounts. This change, announced on January 30, 2025, aims to "prevent fraudulent use," according to Nintendo.

The impact on international customers is significant. Access to Japan-exclusive titles and potentially lower prices due to favorable exchange rates are now hampered. Games like Yo-kai Watch 1 (Switch port), Famicom Wars, Super Robot Wars T, Mother 3, and various Shin Megami Tensei and Fire Emblem titles, previously accessible through the Japanese eShop, are now harder to obtain for those outside Japan.

Nintendo recommends using Japanese-issued credit cards. However, obtaining one without a Japanese residence card presents a significant obstacle for most international consumers. Purchasing Japanese eShop cards from online retailers like Amazon JP and PlayAsia offers a viable alternative, allowing users to add funds to their accounts without revealing their location.

While Nintendo hasn't detailed the specifics of the "fraudulent use" they aim to prevent, the upcoming Nintendo Direct on April 2, 2025, might shed more light on this policy and other future changes. Existing purchases remain unaffected.
