Nvidia RTX 5070 Ti vs. AMD RX 9070 XT: A Comparison

Author : Jacob May 01,2025

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 may reign supreme in the graphics card market, but its hefty price tag of $1,999+ puts it out of reach for many gamers. Fortunately, you don't need the top-tier GPU to enjoy stunning 4K gaming. Both the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Ti and the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT offer a more budget-friendly alternative without compromising on performance, delivering a robust 4K gaming experience.

Although current market prices are elevated due to high demand and limited supply post-launch, the RTX 5070 Ti and RX 9070 XT stand out as the ideal choices for those seeking a high-end gaming setup without breaking the bank.

RTX 5070 Ti vs. RX 9070 XT: Specs

Comparing the specs of graphics cards with different architectures can be challenging. Nvidia's CUDA cores and AMD's Shading Units, while similar in function, are fundamentally different, making direct numerical comparisons less meaningful.

The AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT features 64 RDNA 4 compute units, each with 64 shader units, totaling 4,096. Additionally, each compute unit includes two AI Accelerators and one RT Accelerator, resulting in 128 and 64, respectively. It comes equipped with 16GB of GDDR6 memory on a 256-bit bus, sufficient for today's games but potentially stretched at 4K in the future.

On the other hand, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Ti also boasts 16GB of VRAM, but it utilizes the newer GDDR7 memory for enhanced speed. This is paired with a 256-bit bus, offering higher bandwidth. The RTX 5070 Ti includes 70 Streaming Multiprocessors (equivalent to Compute Units) and 8,960 CUDA Cores, twice the Shader Units per Compute Unit as seen since the RTX 3080. However, this doesn't necessarily translate to double the performance.

RTX 5070 Ti vs. RX 9070 XT: Performance

Despite the RTX 5070 Ti's impressive specs on paper, the real-world performance between it and the RX 9070 XT is remarkably close. Both cards are excellent choices for 4K gaming and among the best for 1440p gaming.

During my review of the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT, I anticipated it would lag behind the RTX 5070 Ti, especially in ray-traced games. However, in games like Cyberpunk 2077, the RX 9070 XT consistently stayed within a few frames of the pricier RTX 5070 Ti.

While the RTX 5070 Ti does outperform in some titles, such as Total War: Warhammer 3 (87fps at 4K versus the RX 9070 XT's 76fps), the RX 9070 XT averaged 2% faster across various games. This slight edge, combined with a 21% lower price, makes the RX 9070 XT a compelling choice.

RTX 5070 Ti vs. RX 9070 XT: Software and Features

Choosing the right graphics card today involves more than just hardware specs. Both Nvidia and AMD offer robust software suites that enhance the capabilities of their GPUs.

The Nvidia RTX 5070 Ti benefits from Nvidia's DLSS suite, which includes AI upscaling and Frame Generation. With DLSS 4, Nvidia introduces multi-frame generation, capable of producing three AI-generated frames for each rendered frame. This boosts frame rates but increases latency, mitigated by Nvidia Reflex. It's recommended to use this feature only when achieving at least 45fps, ideally over 60fps.

AMD's RX 9070 XT also supports Frame Generation but is limited to one interpolated frame per rendered frame. However, with FSR 4, AMD introduces AI upscaling to its lineup for the first time. Unlike previous temporal upscaling methods, FSR 4 leverages the Radeon RX 9070 XT's AI accelerators for more accurate image upscaling, though it's slightly slower than FSR 3. As this is AMD's first generation of AI upscaling, it's worth noting Nvidia's seven-year lead in DLSS development.

RTX 5070 Ti vs. RX 9070 XT: Price

The current GPU market is characterized by inflated prices due to high demand and limited supply. Both Nvidia and AMD suggest retail prices, but actual prices can vary widely due to retailer and third-party manufacturer pricing strategies.

At its launch price of $599, the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT is a standout value, delivering exceptional 4K performance with the aid of FSR 4 AI upscaling. This pricing reflects a return to more reasonable flagship GPU prices, a welcome change from the upward trend started with Nvidia's RTX 2080 Ti.

In contrast, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Ti, priced at $749, represents a $150 premium over the RX 9070 XT despite similar performance. While it offers features like Multi-Frame Generation, the value proposition largely depends on individual gaming needs and preferences.

Winner: AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT

The Winner Is… the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT

Both the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT and Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Ti excel at 1440p gaming, but the RX 9070 XT's ability to match the RTX 5070 Ti's performance at a significantly lower price makes it the clear winner. As prices stabilize, the value offered by the RX 9070 XT becomes even more compelling.

For those building a gaming PC aimed at high-end 1440p or 4K gaming, the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT emerges as the top choice. While it lacks multi-frame generation, this feature is less critical for gamers without high-refresh 4K monitors.
