The highly anticipated Ōkami sequel, announced at last year's Game Awards, has finally received some clarification. While details remain scarce, IGN's recent interview with the project leads revealed crucial information. The sequel is confirmed as a direct continuation of the original Ōkami's storyline, featuring the return of the sun goddess Amaterasu herself – a point initially met with a cryptic "I wonder..." from director Hideki Kamiya, but later confirmed by producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi.
The interview also addressed the Nintendo DS prequel, Ōkamiden, starring Amaterasu's child, Chibiterasu. While acknowledging the game's existence and its mixed reception (due to its DS platform and the absence of key original team members), Hirabayashi stated the sequel will be a direct continuation of the original Ōkami's narrative, effectively sidelining Ōkamiden's storyline.
This approach is justified by Ōkami's ending, which sets up a sequel perfectly. Amaterasu and another character embark on a new, unexplored journey, leaving ample opportunity for new challenges and adventures.
However, fans will have to exercise patience. The sequel is in very early development, with the early announcement driven by the team's excitement. According to Hirabayashi, further updates will be some time coming.
