Analyst Predictions for PS5 Pro Sales Despite Price Increase
PS5 Pro's Enhanced Capabilities Fuel Speculation About a New Handheld Console
The $700 PS5 Pro's launch is anticipated to mirror the PS4 Pro's success, according to Ampere Analysis. Despite a significant price difference compared to the standard PS5 (a 40-50% increase, much larger than the PS4/PS4 Pro gap), they project approximately 1.3 million units sold during the November 2024 launch window. This is considerably lower than the PS4 Pro's launch sales, but still significant.
Ampere Analysis highlights the price disparity between the PS5 and PS5 Pro, suggesting it might dampen demand. However, they believe the price will be less of a deterrent for dedicated PlayStation fans. The PS4 Pro ultimately sold around 14.5 million units, representing roughly 12% of total PS4 sales, with an estimated 13 million unit sell-through within five years. Sell-through is defined as direct consumer purchases from retailers.
Furthermore, PS5 lead architect Mark Cerny confirmed that the PS5 Pro will enhance PSVR2 gaming through performance boosts. The upgraded GPU will allow for higher resolutions in PSVR2 titles, although specific compatible games haven't been announced. The console's PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution upscaling technology will also be compatible with PSVR2. The PS5 Pro also boasts compatibility with existing PS5 accessories, including the PS Portal.
This PS Portal compatibility, coupled with earlier rumors of a new PlayStation handheld capable of running PS5 games, has reignited speculation. While unconfirmed, the PS5 Pro's advanced capabilities could pave the way for a new portable PlayStation console.
