Sonic Fan-Made Game Has Serious Sonic Mania Vibes

Sonic Galactic: A Sonic Mania-Inspired Fan Game

Sonic Galactic, a fan-made title from Starteam, evokes the spirit of Sonic Mania, capturing the charm of classic Sonic gameplay and pixel art. This labor of love, unveiled at the 2020 Sonic Amateur Games Expo, imagines a 32-bit Sonic adventure, reminiscent of a hypothetical Sega Saturn release. The game successfully blends authentic retro 2D platforming with a unique twist.

The recently released second demo (early 2025) offers players a taste of this nostalgic experience. It features the iconic trio – Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles – navigating all-new zones. Joining the classic lineup are two exciting additions: Fang the Sniper (from Sonic Triple Trouble), seeking revenge against Dr. Eggman, and the Illusion Island-native Tunnel the Mole.

Each character boasts unique pathways within each level, echoing Sonic Mania's design. The special stages maintain the Mania aesthetic, challenging players to collect rings within a timed 3D environment. While a complete playthrough of Sonic's levels takes approximately one hour, the other characters each have a single level, resulting in a total playtime of around two hours.

Key Features:

  • Pixel-perfect nostalgia: A stunning pixel art style reminiscent of classic Sonic games and Sonic Mania.
  • New playable characters: Experience the game through the eyes of Fang the Sniper and Tunnel the Mole, alongside the classic trio.
  • Unique character paths: Explore diverse level designs tailored to each playable character's abilities.
  • Mania-inspired special stages: Test your skills in challenging 3D special stages.
  • Substantial playtime: Enjoy roughly an hour of Sonic's stages and a couple of hours of total gameplay in the current demo.
