Following my exploration of the best Switch party games in 2024, the exceptional release of Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club inspired me to compile a list of my favorite visual novels and adventure games currently available on the Switch. This encompasses both genres, as some titles are purely visual novels while others blend adventure elements. The selection spans various regions and release years, offering a diverse range of experiences. As always, the order is arbitrary.
Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club ($49.99) + Famicom Detective Club: The Two-Case Collection
Nintendo's 2021 remakes of the Famicom Detective Club games were a revelation. The addition of Emio – The Smiling Man in 2024, available physically and digitally, is a stunning achievement. It feels like a genuine sequel, though this might not appeal to all players. The production value is exceptional, and the shockingly good ending fully justifies its M rating. This unexpected addition to my top games of the year is a testament to Nintendo's commitment to quality. Download the demo to experience it firsthand. For those preferring to start with the originals, the Famicom Detective Club: The Two-Case Collection is readily available. Fans of classic adventure game design will find much to love here.
VA-11 Hall-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action ($14.99)
A repeat appearance on my "best of" lists, VA-11 Hall-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action consistently stands out for its narrative, music, aesthetic, and particularly its memorable characters. Its portability on the Switch enhances its appeal, making it a game I wholeheartedly recommend to everyone, regardless of their preference for point-and-click adventures. Mix drinks, change lives – it's that simple.
The House in Fata Morgana: Dreams of the Revenants Edition ($39.99)
The definitive edition of The House in Fata Morgana is a storytelling masterpiece. This pure visual novel, encompassing the original game and substantial additions, shines on the Switch. Prepare for a gothic horror experience that will linger long after the credits roll. The music alone is worth the price of admission.
Coffee Talk Episode 1+2 ($12.99 + $14.99)
While sold separately on the eShop and in physical form (imported from Japan), a North American bundle exists, justifying their inclusion as a single entry. Though not reaching the same heights as VA-11 Hall-A, Coffee Talk offers a relaxing experience with a compelling narrative, charming pixel art, and delightful music. Coffee lovers and those who appreciate engaging characters will find this a perfect fit.
Type-Moon's Visual Novels: Tsukihime, Fate/stay night, and Mahoyo (Variable)
This entry encompasses multiple titles. The recent release of Fate/stay night Remastered makes a singular choice difficult. Therefore, Tsukihime, Fate/stay night, and Mahoyo are included as essential visual novels on the Switch. Their length is substantial, but the quality is undeniable. Fate/stay night serves as an excellent introduction to the genre, while Tsukihime's remake is highly recommended. Witch on the Holy Night follows as a strong contender.
PARANORMASIGHT: The Seven Mysteries of Honjo ($19.99)
Square Enix's PARANORMASIGHT is a surprising gem. The narrative, presentation, and even its meta-narrative elements are captivating. This mystery adventure game boasts amazing characters, striking visuals, and engaging mechanics. A must-play for fans of the genre.
Gnosia ($24.99)
Described as a sci-fi social deduction RPG, Gnosia is best categorized as a hybrid of adventure and visual novel elements. The core gameplay involves identifying imposters and voting them into "cold sleep." Despite some RNG-related limitations, Gnosia provides a fantastic experience, leading me to purchase physical copies for both Switch and PS5 in addition to the Steam version. While not for everyone, it remains a delightful surprise.
Steins;Gate Series (Variable)
Spike Chunsoft's Steins;Gate releases on Switch, especially Steins;Gate Elite, are crucial for introducing newcomers to visual novels. While I await the original version's port, Steins;Gate Elite is highly recommended for anime fans seeking a compelling visual novel experience. Subsequent games are best enjoyed after completing the original story.
AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES and nirvanA Initiative (Variable)
The collaboration of Zero Escape creator Kotaro Uchikoshi and No More Heroes character designer Yusuke Kozaki resulted in two exceptional adventure games. The quality of the story, music, and characters far surpasses expectations given the apparent budget. While a Zero Escape port is desired, the AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES games are well worth the full price.
NEEDY STREAMER OVERLOAD ($19.99)
A game best experienced without prior knowledge, NEEDY STREAMER OVERLOAD is an adventure game with multiple endings, seamlessly blending disturbing horror and heartwarming moments. The story follows a young streamer's daily life. The Switch version was worth the pre-order.
Ace Attorney Series (Variable)
Capcom has brought the complete Ace Attorney series to Switch. With the availability of all titles, there's no excuse to miss this beloved adventure game series. For newcomers, The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles offers the best entry point.
Spirit Hunter: Death Mark, NG, and Death Mark II (Variable)
The Spirit Hunter trilogy blends horror adventure and visual novel elements with a striking art style. While the grotesque imagery might not appeal to all, the excellent localization and storytelling make it a memorable experience.
13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim ($59.99)
A blend of real-time strategy and narrative, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim is a sci-fi masterpiece. The Switch version benefits from the OLED screen in handheld mode. Regardless of the platform, this game is a must-play.
This list exceeds a typical "top 10," reflecting my desire to include all the games I highly recommend. The inclusion of entire series reflects their overall quality. If you have suggestions for additions, please comment below. I'm always seeking exceptional stories in these genres. A separate list of otome games is forthcoming.
