There's a New Game of Thrones Illustrated Edition Coming in November, but Still No Winds of Winter

Author : Blake Mar 17,2025

George R.R. Martin recently shared exciting news on his blog, though not about the highly anticipated The Winds of Winter. Instead, he unveiled the cover for the illustrated edition of A Feast for Crows, the fourth book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series to receive this special treatment. The artwork is by Jeffrey R. McDonald.

A Feast for Crows: The Illustrated Edition is slated for release on November 4, 2025. Pre-orders are now open at major book retailers like Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Target, among others.

This announcement is welcome news for collectors of the illustrated editions. The last one, A Storm of Swords, was released in November 2020, making it a five-year wait between illustrated releases. This edition will also include a foreword by Joe Abercrombie. Martin promises a sneak peek at some interior illustrations later this spring.

The Winds of Winter: Still Waiting?

For those eagerly awaiting The Winds of Winter, the news is less encouraging. Martin’s last update, from December 2024, hinted at the possibility that he might not complete the book in his lifetime, despite having written 1100 pages (as of November 2023). While disappointing for fans who have waited nearly 14 years, there’s still a glimmer of hope for the series' eventual completion, perhaps by another author. However, it seems likely that the illustrated editions of the first five books will be finished before The Winds of Winter sees the light of day.

Do you think George R.R. Martin will finish A Song of Ice and Fire?
