Marathon, Bungie’s Extraction Shooter, Claimed to be After a year of silence, Bungie’s Game Director finally provided an update on their upcoming sci-fi extraction shooter, Marathon. Initially revealed in 2023, details have been scarce until now.

Bungie's Marathon: A Developer Update

A Distant Release, but Playtests Planned for 2025

For over a year, Bungie remained tight-lipped about *Marathon*, their sci-fi extraction shooter. Announced at the May 2023 PlayStation Showcase, the game reignited nostalgia for Bungie's pre-*Halo* era while simultaneously attracting a new generation of players. However, the initial announcement was followed by a prolonged silence. Finally, Bungie offered a much-anticipated developer update.

Game Director Joe Ziegler addressed community concerns directly. He confirmed Marathon is Bungie's take on the extraction shooter genre. While gameplay footage wasn't shown, Ziegler confirmed the game is progressing well, undergoing significant revisions based on extensive player testing. He teased a class-based system featuring customizable "Runners" with unique abilities.

He showcased two Runners, "Thief" and "Stealth," with their names hinting at their gameplay styles. More detailed information remains forthcoming.

Marathon, Bungie’s Extraction Shooter, Claimed to be While details are limited, expanded playtests are expected in 2025. Ziegler stated Bungie aims to include significantly more players in future testing phases, offering opportunities for community involvement. He encouraged fans to wishlist the game on Steam, Xbox, and PlayStation to express interest and receive updates.

Marathon: A Closer Look

*Marathon* reimagines Bungie's early 1990s trilogy. It marks Bungie's most significant departure from the *Destiny* franchise in over a decade. According to former director Chris Barrett, it's not a direct sequel but fits within the established universe and embodies the classic Bungie feel. He added that prior knowledge of the original *Marathon* games isn't necessary, but fans will find familiar references.

Set on Tau Ceti IV, Marathon is a high-stakes extraction shooter where players (Runners) compete for survival, wealth, and glory. Players can team up or go solo to collect alien artifacts and valuable loot, facing potential competition from other crews or perilous last-second extractions.

Marathon, Bungie’s Extraction Shooter, Claimed to be Barrett previously stated Marathon was designed as a PvP-focused game without a single-player campaign, emphasizing player-driven narratives integrated into the overarching story. Ziegler's update suggests this core concept remains, with added elements to modernize the game and introduce a new world with ongoing updates.

Gameplay footage remains under wraps until Bungie is satisfied with the final product. However, Marathon is confirmed for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, with cross-play and cross-save functionality.

Development Challenges

In March 2024, Chris Barrett, the initial project lead, was reportedly dismissed following allegations of misconduct, according to Bloomberg. Joe Ziegler took over as game director, potentially altering development plans. Furthermore, Bungie experienced substantial layoffs (approximately 17% of its workforce), impacting development speed.

Despite the delayed release and setbacks, the promise of expanded playtests in 2025 offers a glimmer of hope for fans eagerly awaiting Marathon's arrival. The developer update suggests progress is continuing, albeit amidst considerable internal challenges at Bungie.
