Riot Games' 2XKO (formerly Project L) is set to revolutionize tag-team fighting games. This article explores its innovative tag-team mechanics and the recently available playable demo.
Reimagining Tag-Team Combat
Duo Play: A Four-Player Experience
Demonstrated at EVO 2024 (July 19-21), 2XKO introduces Duo Play, a unique twist on the 2v2 formula. Instead of one player controlling both characters, two players team up, each controlling a champion. This allows for thrilling 2v2 matches, and even 2v1 showdowns where one player controls two champions. Within each team, one player is the "Point" and the other the "Assist."
The Assist isn't just a spectator; three core mechanics define the tag system:
- Assist Actions: The Point character can call on the Assist for special moves.
- Handshake Tag: The Point and Assist instantly swap roles.
- Dynamic Save: The Assist can interrupt enemy combos to rescue the Point.
Matches are longer than in typical fighting games. Both players must be defeated to win a round, unlike in games like Tekken Tag Tournament. Even defeated champions remain active as Assists.
Strategic Synergies: The Fuse System
Beyond character customization, 2XKO introduces "Fuses"—team synergy options affecting gameplay. The demo showcased five:
- PULSE: Rapid attacks unleash devastating combos.
- FURY: Below 40% health: increased damage and special dash cancel.
- FREESTYLE: Allows two Handshake Tags in quick succession.
- DOUBLE DOWN: Combine ultimate moves with your partner's.
- 2X ASSIST: The Assist can perform multiple actions.
Game designer Daniel Maniago highlighted the Fuse system's role in amplifying player expression and enabling powerful combos, especially for well-coordinated duos.
Champion Selection
The demo featured six League of Legends champions: Braum, Ahri, Darius, Ekko, Yasuo, and Illaoi, each with unique movesets. While Jinx and Katarina were shown in earlier materials, they are not included in the Alpha Lab Playtest, but are planned for future inclusion.
