First Look at 5 New Cards From Tarkir: Dragonstorm, Magic: The Gathering's Next Set

Author : Elijah May 19,2025

While Magic: The Gathering has been making waves with high-profile crossovers like Final Fantasy and Spider-Man, the excitement for the next set, Tarkir: Dragonstorm, is palpable. This set takes us back to the beloved plane of Tarkir, and we have an exclusive preview of five cards that are poised to make a significant impact at draft tables next month. Tarkir: Dragonstorm is now available for preorder on Amazon.

Explore the gallery below to see all five cards, and continue reading for insights from Wizards of the Coast on their design and the overarching themes of the set.

Magic: The Gathering - 5 New Cards from Tarkir: Dragonstorm

6 ImagesThese five cards form what's known as a "cycle," sharing common design elements across each of Magic's colors. They are all affordable, common-rarity creatures that feature abilities linked to one of Tarkir's three-color clans, along with another ability that converts mana into a color from that clan.

Wizards of the Coast Senior Game Designer Adam Prosak explains the importance of these cards: “Three-color limited environments require robust mana fixing at all levels of rarity. We aimed to make mana fixing accessible to a wide range of decks, so we developed numerous designs to address mana issues. These creatures not only help with mana development but also allow you to play to the board simultaneously, unlike tapped lands which only provide mana and can put you at a disadvantage.”

She describes how these clans have evolved: “The passionate, action-oriented monks of the Jeskai, the Whispers using Temur magic, Nagas in the Sultai as protectors (and avengers) of the jungle, the Mardu's military prowess including supporting roles (and the diverse nature of dragons!), and the Abzan clerics working to regrow the lost kin trees.”

PlaySome recent Magic sets have faced criticism for leaning too heavily on tropes or thematic gimmicks, even when revisiting established planes. However, *Tarkir: Dragonstorm* stands out with its straightforward approach to revisiting Tarkir. Senior Worldbuilding Art Director Forrest Schehl acknowledges this feedback: “The core concept for Tarkir was set well before *Murders at Karlov Manor* and subsequent releases, and it remained unchanged. We aimed to blend Dragons and Clans in a novel way, with Dragonstorms playing a crucial role in our vision for this return. Lauren and I felt the pressure to get it right from the start, ensuring we built the next chapter of this cherished plane with authenticity and depth.”

Tarkir: Dragonstorm is now available for preorder, with the set set to launch in both physical and digital formats on April 11, and in-store prerelease events beginning on April 4.
