The PS Portal essentially transforms Sony's DualSense controller into a handheld gaming device by incorporating an 8-inch 1080p LCD screen between its split-pad design. This innovative accessory streams PS5 games at up to 60fps while maintaining all the DualSense's signature features - haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and a responsive touchscreen interface replacing the traditional touchpad. While primarily designed for home use, the Portal can function remotely provided you have an exceptionally stable, high-speed internet connection
Recent updates have expanded the Portal's functionality beyond simple PS5 streaming. Sony now enables direct streaming from its PlayStation Now cloud service, giving users access to over 120 games without needing a PS5 console. This cloud streaming feature (currently in beta) supports popular titles including Ghost of Tsushima, Resident Evil 3 Remake, and Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Note: This feature requires subscription to PlayStation Plus Premium ($18/month).
While alternative remote play solutions exist through third-party apps, the PlayStation Portal offers superior ease-of-use and maintains full DualSense functionality that other solutions can't match.
PlayStation Portal Review by Seth Macy
"The PlayStation Portal defied my initial skepticism to become one of my favorite gaming devices. It provides a vastly superior experience compared to smartphone setups and performs beyond expectations. I particularly appreciate the freedom to play PS5 games anywhere with decent WiFi, especially when household TV access is limited. While not a standalone device (requiring either a PS5 or PlayStation Plus Premium subscription), its only notable limitations are the current inability to connect to WiFi networks requiring browser authentication and lack of Bluetooth audio support. Were it not for these omissions, I'd consider the Portal an essential accessory for every PS5 owner who enjoys handheld gaming or shares their living space with other viewers."
