Annapurna Interactive Faces Uncertain Future After Mass Resignation
A major shakeup has hit Annapurna Interactive, the video game publishing arm of Annapurna Pictures. A dispute with Megan Ellison resulted in the entire staff resigning, leaving the future of the company uncertain.
The Unexpected Departure of Annapurna Interactive's Staff
Known for publishing acclaimed titles like Stray and What Remains of Edith Finch, Annapurna Interactive has lost its entire team in a mass resignation. This followed unsuccessful negotiations between employees and the parent company.
Reports suggest the staff, led by former president Nathan Gary, aimed to establish Annapurna Interactive as an independent entity. However, these negotiations failed, leading to over 20 employees resigning in the wake of Gary's departure.
"The entire 25-person Annapurna Interactive team resigned," Gary confirmed to Bloomberg, adding that the decision was "difficult and not taken lightly."
Annapurna Pictures' Ellison has assured partners of their commitment to ongoing projects and expansion within interactive entertainment. She stated to Bloomberg News that they "continue to seek opportunities for a more integrated approach to linear and interactive storytelling across film, TV, gaming, and theater."
The Impact of the Resignations
This mass exodus has significant implications. Indie developers collaborating with Annapurna now face uncertainty, needing to establish new contact points and confirm the company's commitment to existing agreements.
Remedy Entertainment, whose Control 2 received partial funding from Annapurna Interactive, addressed concerns via its communications director, Thomas Puha, on Twitter (X). Puha clarified that Remedy's agreement for Control 2, including associated rights, is with Annapurna Pictures, and they are self-publishing the game.
Annapurna Interactive has appointed Hector Sanchez, a co-founder, as its new president. Anonymous sources cited by Bloomberg report Sanchez has assured partners of contract fulfillment and staff replacement.
The situation follows a recent restructuring announcement by Annapurna, with Sanchez now leading the indie gaming division after the departures of Gary, Deborah Mars, and Nathan Vella.
