Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Prepares for Launch
Celebrating JRPG Legacy
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 offers a fresh take on turn-based RPGs with innovative real-time elements that enhance player immersion. While clearly nodding to classic JRPGs, particularly the Final Fantasy series, developers have crafted their own distinctive experience. During GDC 2025, Producer François Meurisse shared insights about the game's diverse inspirations with GamesRadar+.
Meurisse revealed Final Fantasy 10 and PlayStation-era titles VII through IX as major influences: "These were formative childhood games for our director Guillaume Broche. We aimed to capture that nostalgic turn-based essence while blending various inspirations. While JRPGs form our core gameplay heritage, we've created something uniquely our own."
The team deliberately avoided mimicking anime aesthetics: "We developed our own artistic vision drawing from early 20th century Belle Époque period with art deco flourishes blended with high fantasy. This creative approach helped establish our distinct visual identity."
Additional Influences
Beyond JRPGs, Expedition 33 integrates defensive mechanics inspired by FromSoftware's Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Meurisse explained: "Our defense system borrows Sekiro's rhythmic, skill-based timing elements."
The battle system also incorporates deckbuilding game concepts: "We implemented action points for skills rather than traditional MP/mana systems, making combat feel fresh while nodding to card game mechanics."
Character Reveal Spotlight
As launch approaches, Expedition 33 will showcase characters weekly. The March 13 trailer introduced Gustave, Lumière's ingenious engineer tasked with stopping the Paintress's deadly prophecies.
The trailer reveals Gustave wielding a sword-pistol hybrid weapon while demonstrating impressive mobility and combat prowess. His skill set appears versatile and impactful, though specific character roles remain undisclosed.
