Deltarune Update: Chapter 4 Nears Completion, but Release Remains Distant
Toby Fox, creator of Undertale, recently shared a development update on Deltarune in his latest newsletter. While good news abounds, a release date for Chapters 3 and 4 remains elusive.
Chapter 4: Almost Ready
Fox confirmed that Chapter 4 is nearing completion. All maps are finished, battles are playable, and the chapter is deemed "basically playable minus some polish." However, minor adjustments remain, including refining two cutscenes, balancing and visually enhancing one battle, improving another battle's background, and enhancing the ending sequences of two more battles. Despite this, three friends who've played the entire chapter have given positive feedback.
The Challenges of a Paid Release
Fox highlighted the complexities of releasing a paid title across multiple platforms and languages. He emphasized the need for extra time to ensure a polished product, unlike the free releases of Chapters 1 and 2.
Pre-Release Tasks:
Before launch, the team must complete several crucial tasks:
- Testing new features
- Finalizing PC and console versions
- Japanese localization
- Rigorous bug testing
Chapter 3 is Done, Chapter 5 is in Early Stages
Chapter 3 development is finished, according to Fox's February newsletter. Interestingly, some team members have already begun preliminary work on Chapter 5, outlining maps and designing attack patterns.
Teasers and Anticipation
The newsletter offered glimpses of upcoming content, including dialogue between Ralsei and Rouxls, a character description for Elnina, and a new item, GingerGuard. While the three-year wait since Chapter 2 has been frustrating for fans, Fox's confirmation that Chapters 3 and 4 combined are longer than Chapters 1 and 2 combined helps maintain excitement.
Looking Ahead
While a specific release date remains unannounced, Fox expressed confidence that future chapter releases will be more streamlined after the launch of Chapters 3 and 4.
