"Formula Legends: Where Art of Rally Meets F1"

Italian studio 3DClouds has unveiled Formula Legends, an engaging new game that draws inspiration from Art of Rally and offers an arcade-style experience centered on open-wheel racing. This title pays homage to more than 50 years of Formula 1 history, albeit without official licenses.

IGN was given an exclusive preview of Formula Legends, showcasing the game's dedication to authentically recreating various eras of F1. While aspects such as AI behavior are still being refined, the attention to detail in representing different periods of F1 racing is already striking.

Formula Legends will boast 16 car models, each with seven distinct liveries. These cars, designed as chunky, toy-style caricatures, pay homage to some of the most iconic racecar designs through their off-brand interpretations. The development team has placed significant emphasis on sound, a crucial element especially for capturing the essence of older F1 cars. Additionally, the game will support modding, allowing for customization of liveries, helmets, and trackside sponsors, which could greatly enhance the game's replayability.

The game features 14 circuits, each with multiple variations to reflect their evolution from the 1970s to the 2020s, drawing inspiration from real-world locations. This approach ensures a rich and varied racing experience.

The story mode in Formula Legends promises to be particularly engaging, offering era-based championships that guide players through pivotal moments in F1 history.

Racing in Formula Legends will involve more than just speed. With 200 drivers, each featuring unique skill perks, players will need to strategize around tyre wear, fuel consumption, rubbered-in racing lines, damage, and dynamic weather. Balancing these deeper elements with an accessible arcade approach will be key to the game's success.

Producer Francesco Mantovani shared that the team drew inspiration from 2023’s New Star GP, yet aimed to position Formula Legends between the arcade feel of New Star GP and the driving experience of Art of Rally. Mantovani highlighted Art of Rally as a primary influence, particularly admiring its camera work and track design.

While 3DClouds has primarily developed licensed racing games for younger audiences, such as Paw Patrol Grand Prix, Fast & Furious: Spy Racers, and Hot Wheels Monster Trucks: Stunt Mayhem, Formula Legends represents a passion project. Executive producer Roberta Migliori emphasized the studio's long-held desire to create this game, now made possible through self-funding from previous projects. The timing seems perfect, aligning with the rising popularity of F1.

Located in Milan, near the iconic Monza circuit, 3DClouds is well-positioned to tap into the rich heritage of F1 racing.

Formula Legends is slated for release later this year on Xbox One and Series X|S, PS4 and PS5, PC, and Switch. Although the team currently lacks Switch 2 development kits, Migliori indicated their interest in exploring this platform once feasible.
