Horizon Could Be PlayStation’s Big Movie Win if It Stays Faithful to the Games

Author : Victoria Feb 18,2025

Following the successful cinematic adaptation of Uncharted in 2022 and the critically acclaimed HBO series based on The Last of Us, a Horizon Zero Dawn movie was inevitable. PlayStation Studios and Columbia Pictures have officially confirmed a film adaptation, promising a faithful recreation of Aloy's origin story and the game's stunning, machine-populated world. While still in early development, I'm optimistic this could be Sony's first major video game box office triumph—provided it stays true to the source material.

Recent years have witnessed a surge in successful video game adaptations across film and television. The Super Mario Bros. and Sonic movies, both family-friendly hits, set a high bar for critical acclaim and box office performance. On television, Sony's The Last of Us joins Netflix's Arcane and Amazon Prime's Fallout as fan favorites. Even adaptations with mixed reviews have achieved box office success; the Tom Holland-led Uncharted film grossed over $400 million.

However, challenges remain. While the "video game curse" is largely a thing of the past, faithfulness to the source material is crucial. Uncharted, despite its audience appeal, fell short of expectations for many fans. Conversely, last year's Borderlands film and Amazon's Like a Dragon: Yakuza adaptation suffered from poor critical reception and box office numbers due to their significant deviations from the original games' storylines, lore, and tone. They failed to capture the essence of the worlds fans loved.

Horizon's robotic ecosystems

This isn't unique to video game adaptations; Netflix's The Witcher series, for example, took considerable liberties with its source material, altering events, characters, and overall tone. While adaptations often require changes, these examples demonstrate how drastic alterations can alienate fans and potentially doom a project.

The upcoming Horizon film isn't the first attempt at bringing the franchise to screen. Netflix's now-canceled series, rumored to be titled "Horizon 2074" and set before the apocalypse, proved controversial among fans who desired a faithful adaptation of the original game's compelling narrative and iconic robotic creatures.

The shift to a theatrical release is a smart move, given the extensive CGI required. A Hollywood budget is essential to realize the world's potential and bring its visuals to life.

If the Horizon film emulates the success of The Last of Us, Arcane, and Fallout, which were praised for their faithfulness to the source material, it has a high chance of success. While The Last of Us introduced new storylines, it remained true to the narrative structure, resonating with both fans and newcomers. Horizon's success hinges on a similar approach.

Faithfulness isn't merely about fan service; Horizon Zero Dawn's narrative earned prestigious awards, including Best Narrative at The Game Awards 2017 and Outstanding Achievement in Story at the 2018 DICE Awards. Its compelling story, set in a 31st-century North America, follows Aloy's journey to uncover her origins and their connection to the scientist Elisabet Sobeck. Aloy, along with her allies Erend and Varl, and the enigmatic Sylens, are captivating characters within a richly detailed world. The game's exploration of climate change and a rogue AI that created the robotic creatures adds further depth.

Horizon's unique cultures

The intricate worldbuilding, reminiscent of Avatar's Na'vi tribes, offers immense potential for a compelling film franchise. The unique combat encounters, featuring creatures like Sawtooths, Tallnecks, and Stormbirds, promise spectacular visuals. These elements, combined with rival tribes and the rogue AI Hades, create a world full of action and suspense.

Horizon's compelling story, unique world, and cinematic aesthetic are all strong ingredients for a successful adaptation. The expansive narrative of Forbidden West further enhances the franchise's potential. If adapted carefully, Horizon could become a long-term, successful film franchise, matching the success of its source material.

Success depends on maintaining the core elements that made the game a success. With other Sony titles like Ghost of Tsushima and Helldivers 2 also slated for adaptation, a successful Horizon film could pave the way for a new era of PlayStation-based film and television franchises. However, deviating from what made Horizon great risks alienating fans and facing financial setbacks similar to Borderlands. Sony must prioritize faithfulness to the source material to ensure the film's success.
