The James Gunn-led Phase 1 of the DC Cinematic Universe is finally here, kicking off with his highly anticipated Superman movie — and it appears both the director and studio head view this project as absolutely essential to the success of the broader "Gods and Monsters" storytelling arc.
“It’s incredibly important,” Gunn told Entertainment Weekly in an interview released on June 19. “I wouldn’t classify [the animated series] Creature Commandos as vital, but Peacemaker and Superman are both key pieces when it comes to building out the larger narrative.”
That said, he emphasized that finding the right balance is crucial: providing fans with essential context without alienating casual viewers who might not be fully immersed in every detail. After all, if you keep them engaged rather than shutting them out, they may just become dedicated followers.
"I’m being very deliberate about ensuring that anyone can jump in and follow the next chapter without feeling lost. Other projects add rich layers to what you’re watching,” Gunn elaborated. “This approach might evolve as we dive deeper into the universe, potentially mirroring the Infinity War-Endgame dynamic where seeing one film is necessary to fully grasp the other.”He added, “Currently, I’m designing it so that you don’t need to watch Superman to enjoy Supergirl, for instance. While there are plenty of threads in Superman that connect to Peacemaker, they aren’t mandatory viewing. It’s a bonus if you’ve seen them, but we also include ‘Previously in the DCU’ segments before each episode, making the TV entries quite accessible.”
Gunn’s Superman movie is scheduled for theatrical release on July 8, while fans will need to wait until August 21 for season 2 of Peacemaker to premiere on Max.
