Pokémon TCG Pocket Gets Trading Today and Players Absolutely Hate It

Author : Patrick Feb 28,2025

Pokémon TCG Pocket's highly anticipated trading update has arrived, but instead of celebration, it's met with widespread player outrage. The trading system, criticized last week for its restrictions, has launched to an even more negative reception due to its unexpectedly demanding requirements.

Social media is flooded with player frustration. The core issue revolves around the excessive resource consumption needed for each trade. Two distinct items are required: Trade Stamina, which replenishes slowly or can be purchased with Poké Gold (real money), and Trade Tokens.

Trade Tokens are particularly contentious. Trading higher-rarity cards demands significant quantities of these tokens: 120 for a 3-Diamond card, 400 for a 1-Star card, and 500 for a 4-Diamond (ex Pokémon) card. The only way to obtain Trade Tokens is by discarding cards from one's collection, with the conversion rates heavily favoring the game's developers. For example, selling five ex Pokémon only yields enough tokens to trade one. Selling a Crown rarity card, the game's rarest, provides enough tokens for only three ex Pokémon trades.

Overwhelming Negative Feedback

Reddit posts and comments express widespread anger, labeling the trading system a "monumental failure," "hilariously toxic," and "predatory." Players describe the process as excessively laborious and counterintuitive, requiring minutes spent navigating menus for a single trade. Many are vowing to cease spending money on the game, highlighting the perceived greed of the developers. Some even suggest renaming the game, given the impracticality of the trading system.

The high cost of acquiring desirable cards is further fueling the controversy. One player reported spending approximately $1,500 to complete the first set. The inability to readily trade for rarer cards (2-Star and above) ensures players continue purchasing packs for a chance at obtaining them.

Developer Silence

Creatures Inc. remains silent amidst the backlash, a departure from their previous response to initial concerns. While they previously acknowledged player concerns, promising to gather feedback post-launch, the current situation indicates a significant disconnect between player expectations and the implemented system. IGN's request for comment from Creatures Inc. regarding potential changes remains unanswered.

The possibility of adding Trade Tokens as mission rewards could alleviate some concerns, though the inclusion of Trade Stamina in rewards suggests a continued focus on monetization. The poorly received trading update casts a shadow over the upcoming release of Diamond and Pearl Pokémon, Dialga and Palkia, into the game.
