In Project Zomboid's vast world, traversing the map on foot is impractical. Fortunately, many cars remain functional, and hotwiring provides a solution if keys are unavailable. This guide details how to hotwire a vehicle.
Hotwiring is surprisingly simple, requiring just a few button presses, but some prerequisites must be met. While not demanding a top-tier character build, specific skills are necessary.
Hotwiring Mechanics in Project Zomboid
Successfully hotwiring allows driving a car as long as fuel and condition permit, regardless of possessing the keys. However, Level 1 Electrical and Level 2 Mechanics skills are required, unless you choose the Burglar profession during character creation, bypassing the skill need.
How to Hotwire:
- Enter the vehicle.
- Access the vehicle radial menu (default key: V).
- Select "Hotwire" and wait.
After meeting the prerequisites, follow these steps for any operable vehicle. The hotwiring process is automatic; press W to start the engine once complete. Note that fuel levels vary, so securing gasoline is advisable.
Skill Leveling:
For non-Burglars, Electrical and Mechanics skills increase through specific in-game actions:
- Electrical: Dismantle electronics (watches, radios, TVs).
- Mechanics: Remove and reinstall mechanical parts.
Books and magazines also provide skill boosts, found in homes, shops, mailboxes, sheds, and bookshelves. Server admins can use the "/addxp" command to grant skill XP directly. Remember to use a screwdriver or appropriate tool for dismantling and installation. Vehicle parts are accessed by right-clicking and selecting "Vehicle Mechanics."
