Shadow of the Erdtree Solves One Elden Ring Boss Mystery

Author : Savannah Dec 19,2024

Elden Ring's Shadow of the Erdtree expansion finally explains the Dragonlord Placidusax's missing body parts, a long-standing mystery for players. The DLC reveals the source of the damage: a brutal battle with Bayle the Dread.

**Spoilers for Elden Ring and Shadow of the Erdtree ahead.**
Dragonlord Placidusax, a notoriously difficult secret boss in Elden Ring, is encountered in a weakened state, missing three heads and a wing. The expansion clarifies this.

Placidusax's Missing Heads and the Fight with Bayle the Dread

Reddit user Matrix_030 discovered that two of Placidusax's missing heads are embedded in Bayle the Dread's neck, a testament to their ferocious encounter. Bayle himself is also significantly injured, missing wings and limbs, suggesting a devastatingly even fight.

The Talisman of the Dread, found in Elder's Hovel, further supports this theory. Its description details a challenge issued by Bayle to the ancient Dragonlord, resulting in "grievous mutual injury."

Despite their injuries, both dragons remain formidable foes in Elden Ring, known for their massive health pools and challenging attacks. Bayle's aggressive fighting style makes summoning Spirit Ashes difficult at the start of the battle, unless specific strategies are used.

While the location of Placidusax's third missing head remains unknown, many players believe Bayle is responsible for that injury as well. The expansion provides compelling evidence to support this conclusion. The mystery of Placidusax's missing parts is largely solved, showcasing the depth of Elden Ring's lore and the intensity of this ancient dragon battle.
