Stardew Valley 2 Considered, But Easier to Expand Original Game

Author : Olivia May 15,2025

Eric "ConcernedApe" Barone, the mastermind behind Stardew Valley, has hinted at the possibility of developing a sequel, tentatively titled "Stardew Valley 2." In an engaging conversation with TigerBelly, Barone expressed that while the idea of a sequel is tempting, the process of building a new game from scratch is significantly more challenging than enhancing the existing framework of Stardew Valley. "It's so much easier to just add more stuff to Stardew Valley than to make a whole new game from scratch," he noted, emphasizing the effort required to establish core systems anew.

Barone elaborated on the ease of updating Stardew Valley, mentioning how he can freely implement whimsical additions like "green rain," without the burden of creating foundational elements. Despite this, he confessed, "I might eventually make a Stardew Valley 2, to be honest," leaving fans hopeful yet grounded in the reality of game development timelines (thanks, Nintendo Life).

In the same interview, Barone shared his desire to not be solely defined as the "Stardew Valley guy," which is why he's currently focusing on his next project, Haunted Chocolatier. However, he cautioned fans not to anticipate a release date for this new game anytime soon, as there is "still a lot to be done," and he aims for it to surpass Stardew Valley in quality.

Stardew Valley has received widespread acclaim, initially earning an 8.8 "Great" rating in our Stardew Valley review from 2016. Fast forward to 2024, our reassessment celebrated it as a 10/10 "masterpiece," with our review stating: "Stardew Valley is not only the best farming game I’ve played, it is one of my favorite games of all time. That myself and others keep returning to this eight-year-old gem each time it gets even the smallest update speaks to how it’s truly a masterpiece in the genre it both reinvigorated and has come to define."

For those looking to dive into or revisit Stardew Valley, our Stardew Valley Beginner's Guide has been updated for the 2024 1.6 update, which introduces new crops, fish, and exciting additions like the Raccoon Family Quests that unlock a new shop and valuable rewards.
