Assassin’s Creed Shadows introduces players to two distinct protagonists: the Shinobi Naoe and the Samurai Yasuke. As the game approaches its launch, many are curious about when and how to switch between these characters. Here's a detailed guide on switching between Naoe and Yasuke in Assassin’s Creed Shadows.

While Assassin’s Creed Shadows boasts a vast open world, the game begins with a linear prologue that lasts about 90 minutes. During this time, players will alternate between Naoe and Yasuke at specific moments. After completing the prologue, players will remain locked as Naoe for several hours.
For those eager to step into the shoes of Yasuke and live out their Samurai fantasy, there's a wait involved. The early game focuses entirely on Naoe, with Yasuke not appearing until the Temple of the Horseman Quest. Yasuke becomes playable during the Fire and Lightning Quest, but only temporarily. It's not until after completing this quest and Act I that players can switch between the two characters more freely.
How Long Does it Take to Unlock Protagonist Switching in Assassin’s Creed Shadows?
In my playthrough, it took about 10 hours to reach the end of Act I and unlock the ability to switch protagonists freely. This time included a lot of side content. For players aiming to progress quickly through the first act and experience the dual protagonists, it's possible to reach this point in around 6 to 8 hours.
How to Switch Between Yasuke and Naoe in Assassin’s Creed Shadows
Some cutscenes allow players to choose between playing as Yasuke and Naoe in Assassin’s Creed Shadows
Once unlocked, switching between Naoe and Yasuke becomes straightforward. One method is through fast travel. When selecting a fast travel location on the map, players will see two prompts: one for fast travel and another to fast travel as the other protagonist. Choosing the latter will spawn you at the chosen location as the alternate character. This option is available at various points on the map, including Synchronization points and Kakurega Hideouts.
Additionally, certain story quests allow players to choose which protagonist to play as when the quest is presented.
When Can’t You Switch Protagonists in Assassin’s Creed Shadows? Answered
In the expansive world of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, players enjoy considerable freedom to switch protagonists after Act I. However, there are specific story moments and major quests where the protagonist is locked.
It's important to note that there are character-specific quests and activities. Naoe and Yasuke each have quests that delve into their backstories before they met, featuring only one character at a time. There are also side activities designated for either Naoe or Yasuke, marked by specific symbols: a Samurai helmet for Yasuke and a Shinobi's hood for Naoe.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows is set to launch on March 20th for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
