The beloved Dungeons & Dragons show, Critical Role, is on the brink of unveiling its first major video game, with CEO Travis Willingham hinting that an announcement could come "any day" now. During a recent chat with Business Insider, the team shared their expansive vision for the future. While the name of the game and its precise connection to the Critical Role universe remain under wraps, Willingham assured fans that the development team is diligently working on it.
Willingham, an actor and one of Critical Role's key figures, elaborated on what fans can expect from the video game spinoff. "They'll actually be getting their hands on the stick and controlling the outcome of the story, changing what might be possible from not just some of their favorite characters, but new offerings in the world of Exandria," he explained. This suggests an interactive experience where players can influence the narrative and explore new facets of the Exandria world.
Willingham co-founded Critical Role with fellow voice acting talents such as Liam O'Brien, Marisha Ray, Sam Riegel, Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, and Matthew Mercer. Since its launch, Critical Role has expanded into a rich universe, with one of its standout projects being the Amazon Prime Video series, Critical Role: The Legend of Vox Machina.
The upcoming video game will complement Critical Role's diverse portfolio without directly tying into existing projects. In a December 2024 interview with Rolling Stone, Willingham mentioned that the team was in "active pursuit" of creating this video game spinoff, indicating they were nearing the end of a multi-year journey. Whether the game will follow one of Critical Role's campaigns or introduce an original story within the Exandria universe is still a mystery.
Originally, the team anticipated announcing the game by the end of 2024 or early 2025. As we're now well into 2025, the excitement builds as the announcement looms ever closer. Willingham reflected on their approach to the gaming industry, stating, "Those collaborations we’ve had with various partners have been little toe dips in the pool just to see how it feels... You know, there’s a lot of upheaval in the interactive space right now. And we’ve seen studios sort of bear and weather those strains. It’s trying to become smarter about it and find out how we might fit into that larger ecosystem."
While no release date has been set for the Critical Role video game yet, fans can stay engaged by catching the latest updates on The Legend of Vox Machina Season 4.
