'Fallouts Like That Happen, It's Just Part of the Deal' — Mass Effect 1 and 2 Composer Jack Wall Discusses Why He Failed to Return for Mass Effect 3

Composer Jack Wall explains his absence from Mass Effect 3, revealing a professional disagreement with then-development chief Casey Hudson. Wall, celebrated for his 80s-inspired sci-fi scores in the first two Mass Effect games – particularly the acclaimed soundtrack for Mass Effect 2, including the iconic "Suicide Mission" – didn't return for the third installment.

In a recent interview with The Guardian, Wall stated that Hudson was dissatisfied with his work on Mass Effect 2, despite the soundtrack's critical success and BAFTA nomination. While acknowledging a creative tension, Wall remained diplomatic, characterizing the fallout as an unfortunate but ultimately isolated incident in his career.

He offered a more detailed account of the challenges in completing Mass Effect 2's score, particularly the "Suicide Mission" sequence, suggesting these pressures may have contributed to the strained relationship with Hudson. Wall described the process as incredibly demanding, highlighting the lack of support due to the overall development team's intense focus on finishing the game. Despite the difficulties, he expressed pride in the final product, considering the "Suicide Mission" sequence one of the best game endings he's ever experienced.

Following Mass Effect 2, Wall transitioned to composing for the Call of Duty franchise, recently contributing to Black Ops 6. BioWare, currently developing the next Mass Effect title after Dragon Age: The Veilguard, has yet to announce its composer for the upcoming game.
