Xbox Revives Friend Requests After a Decade-Long Absence
Xbox has finally reinstated the much-requested friend request system, ending a decade-long hiatus and delighting countless gamers. This article explores the return of this essential social feature.
A Warm Welcome Back
The announcement, made via blog post and X (formerly Twitter), marks a significant shift from the previous decade's passive social system. Xbox Senior Product Manager, Klarke Clayton, celebrated the news, highlighting the renewed two-way, invite-based friendship system, offering users greater control and flexibility. Friend requests can now be sent, accepted, or declined via the console's People tab.
From "Follow" to Friends
The Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S previously utilized a "follow" system, allowing users to view each other's activity without mutual confirmation. While fostering an open environment, this lacked the control and intentionality of friend requests. The distinction between friends and followers was often blurry, hindering the identification of genuine connections.
The "follow" feature remains, enabling one-way connections for following content creators or communities. Existing friends and followers will be automatically categorized under the new system, maintaining existing relationships.
Privacy and Customization
Microsoft emphasizes privacy, introducing new settings to manage friend requests, follower requests, and notifications. These controls are accessible within the Xbox settings menu.
Positive Reception and Rollout
The news has generated overwhelmingly positive feedback, with users expressing their excitement on social media. Many highlight the absurdity of the previous system, which often resulted in an influx of unwanted followers.
While some players were unaware of the feature's absence, the return caters primarily to socially engaged players. However, the enjoyment of solo gaming remains unaffected.
A precise release date is pending, but the feature is currently being tested by Xbox Insiders on consoles and PC. A full rollout is expected later this year. Joining the Xbox Insiders program provides early access.
