Obsidian Entertainment's CEO, Feargus Urquhart, has publicly expressed his strong interest in developing a game based on Microsoft's Shadowrun IP. This follows an interview where he was asked which non-Fallout Xbox franchise he'd prefer to work on. While Obsidian is currently occupied with projects like Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2, Urquhart clearly stated his preference for Shadowrun.

He emphasized his long-standing love for the franchise, noting that he's owned several editions of the tabletop RPG since its initial release. This passion, coupled with Obsidian's proven track record of crafting compelling sequels within established universes (like Fallout: New Vegas), suggests a potentially exciting future for the Shadowrun video game series.

Obsidian's history includes successful work on various RPG sequels, demonstrating their skill in expanding existing worlds. Urquhart himself has previously commented on the advantages of working on sequels within the RPG genre.

The Shadowrun franchise, originating as a tabletop RPG in 1989, has seen numerous video game adaptations. While Harebrained Schemes has produced several Shadowrun games recently, including remastered versions released in 2022, the community is eager for a new, original title. The last standalone entry, Shadowrun: Hong Kong, was released in 2015. Microsoft currently holds the video game rights, acquired following its purchase of FASA Interactive in 1999.

While the specifics of Obsidian's vision for a Shadowrun game remain undisclosed, Urquhart's enthusiasm and Obsidian's experience strongly suggest that a potential project would be in capable hands. The prospect of a new Shadowrun game developed by Obsidian is a compelling one for fans of the cyberpunk-fantasy setting.
