"Adult's First LEGO Mario Set: No Regrets"

Author : Adam May 26,2025

As a practical person, I've always focused on spending money on essentials, with the occasional splurge on a video game when it's on sale. However, last year, I ventured into the world of LEGO sets, something I hadn't considered since childhood. The nostalgia of building LEGO sets was strong, but it was the cost that made me hesitate. LEGO sets, especially those linked to popular franchises like movies or video games, tend to be on the pricier side. It took me a while to justify purchasing the LEGO Super Mario Piranha Plant, which had been on sale since last October for under $50. Finally, I decided it was the perfect quirky addition to my desk, replacing a typical potted plant with something more fun and engaging.

As a long-time fan of Mario games, this set seemed like the ideal way to showcase my passion for the franchise. While LEGO's botanical line offers beautiful flower sets, none capture the whimsical charm and slight terror of the Piranha Plant.

The joy of the final product was matched by the satisfaction of the build itself, which took an afternoon but kept me fully engaged. This is my first LEGO Nintendo set, but it won't be my last.

How Much Are You Willing to Spend on a LEGO Set You Love?

LEGO sets can be a costly indulgence, especially with new adult-targeted sets priced at $200 or more. It's easy to get carried away when you're passionate about a set. For me, the affordability of the Mario LEGO set under $50 was a deciding factor. The hours spent building it, coupled with the daily joy it brings me, justify the cost. While it's worth more than $50 to me, that's the threshold I'm comfortable spending.
