Apex Legends Battle Pass U-Turn: Respawn Reverses Controversial Changes

Respawn Entertainment has reversed course on its controversial Apex Legends battle pass changes after a significant player backlash. The proposed two-part, $9.99 battle pass system, eliminating the option to purchase the premium pass with in-game Apex Coins, has been scrapped.

Return to the Classic Model

Respawn announced on X (formerly Twitter) that the original 950 Apex Coin premium battle pass will return for Season 22, launching August 6th. The developer admitted poor communication surrounding the changes and pledged improved transparency going forward. They reiterated their commitment to addressing player concerns, including cheat prevention, game stability, and quality-of-life improvements. Patch notes detailing stability fixes will be released on August 5th.

The Original Controversial Plan

The initially proposed Season 22 battle pass system was significantly altered from the established model. It included:

  • Free Pass
  • Premium Pass (950 Apex Coins)
  • Ultimate Pass ($9.99)
  • Ultimate+ Pass ($19.99)

With a single payment required per season for all tiers. This differs greatly from the now-abandoned two-part payment structure.

The earlier plan required two $9.99 payments for the premium pass, one at the season's start and another midway through. This, combined with the removal of the Apex Coin purchase option and the introduction of a more expensive premium+ tier, sparked widespread outrage.

Player Backlash and the Reversal

The negative response was immediate and intense. Players flooded X and the Apex Legends subreddit with criticism, many vowing to boycott future battle passes. The Steam page for Apex Legends saw a surge in negative reviews, reaching 80,587 at the time of writing.

While the reversal is welcomed, the incident underscores the importance of player feedback in game development. Respawn's response, acknowledging the mistake and promising better communication, is a crucial step in regaining player trust. The community awaits the August 5th patch notes and the launch of Season 22 to see the promised improvements.
