Team Ninja officially unveiled Nioh 3 today during Sony's State of Play presentation.
The debut trailer confirmed an early 2026 release window for this action RPG sequel. This installment introduces expansive open fields to explore, along with both Ninja and Samurai combat styles. A playable demo is available starting today.
Here's the official description from the PlayStation Blog:
In Nioh 3, players assume the role of a young warrior destined to become the next Shogun. While the reasons behind his relentless fight against yokai remain a story for another day, we can confirm that players will now engage in battles using two distinct combat styles: Samurai and Ninja.
The Samurai style delivers gameplay reminiscent of previous Nioh titles. New mechanics like Arts Proficiency, which amplifies martial arts power, and Deflect, allowing players to parry enemy attacks at the precise moment, have been incorporated. These additions create intense, lethal close-quarters combat encounters.
Conversely, the Ninja style specializes in swift movements including evasive maneuvers and aerial actions. This approach enables ninjas to strike from beyond enemy range by deploying various Ninjitsu techniques tailored to battlefield conditions. Players can utilize abilities such as Mist, which leaves a decoy after attacking, and Evade, permitting narrow escapes from enemy assaults. Both techniques facilitate outmaneuvering opponents while unleashing devastating high-speed attacks from behind.
Players can instantly switch between combat styles at any time, adopting their preferred approach throughout a narrative shaped by strength, speed, and cunning. Depending on enemy behaviors and level design, some players may fluidly alternate between Samurai and Ninja techniques, while others might commit to a single style based on upcoming challenges. Feel empowered to master your favored combat method against some of the most formidable adversaries we've ever created!
Beyond the new combat systems, Nioh 3 introduces open landscapes that offer unprecedented exploration freedom while maintaining the series' signature tension and confrontation. Encounter unexpected battles with powerful yokai, investigate suspicious villages shrouded in violent secrets, and face the grueling trials of The Crucible. Immerse yourself in these thrilling, hostile new environments as you struggle to survive the cursed kingdom!
We're dedicated Nioh enthusiasts here at IGN. Our review of the original Nioh scored 9.6/10, described as "an epic, unforgettable adventure powered by a fierce combat system that masterfully balances style and strategy." We similarly acclaimed Nioh 2 with a 9/10 rating, noting that while "its numerous systems might seem overwhelming at first, the exceptional combat and rewarding difficulty make it absolutely worthwhile." The Nioh franchise has remained relatively quiet since Nioh 2's 2020 launch, though Team Ninja has continued developing projects including Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, Rise of the Rōnin, and the forthcoming Ninja Gaiden 4.
