The developers and publishers of *Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2* have firmly stated that they are not aiming to transform the game into a "full live service" model, following backlash against community events perceived as promoting "FOMO" (Fear of Missing Out). FOMO is a strategy commonly employed by live service games to spur player engagement and expenditure on limited-time virtual items, suggesting that missing the opportunity now means missing it forever.
This tactic is often criticized for fostering an unhealthy dynamic between games and their communities. In 2021, new research commissioned by the UK's GambleAware charity highlighted how many games use a "psychological nudge" to encourage purchases of loot boxes, driven by the fear of missing out on exclusive items or deals. While *Space Marine 2* does not feature loot boxes, it introduced community events to unlock exclusive cosmetics, sparking criticism and leading some to label the game as a "live service."
In response to the backlash, Space Marine 2's publisher, Focus Entertainment, and developer, Saber Interactive, acknowledged the negative feedback on the community events. They assured players that items available through these events would be re-released later for all players. The companies emphasized that they want community events to be an opportunity for dedicated players to unlock items earlier, rather than a source of stress and frustration. They also apologized for the cumbersome process of unlocking these items and are working on simplifying it.
To address the concerns, Focus Entertainment is offering the coveted emblem-less Mk VIII Errant Helmet for free to all players who link their PROS account to *Space Marine 2*. This helmet was part of the Imperial Vigil community event, which concludes on March 3, and was previously exclusive to those who achieved victories with each of the six classes in Operations Mode by the event's end.
Players are currently anticipating the game's 7.0 update, which promises a new weapon, a new Operations map, and PvE Prestige Ranks. Last month, Focus and Saber responded to community concerns about content scarcity and outlined upcoming additions to *Space Marine 2*.
Following its launch late last year, *Space Marine 2* achieved record-breaking sales, moving 5 million copies and becoming the fastest-selling Warhammer video game to date.
