Spider-Man 2's PC port, initially touted for its surprisingly good performance based on its system requirements, has received a mixed reception on Steam. A significant number of players are reporting various technical issues, resulting in a current 55% positive user review rating.
Many users, even those with high-end hardware like RTX 4090 GPUs and the latest drivers, are experiencing frequent crashes. One user reported crashes to the desktop every five minutes, rendering the game unplayable. Another described the game as "rough," citing issues such as loading problems in cutscenes (resulting in extremely low frame rates), audio desynchronization, freezing, stuttering, and general performance problems. Several users have already requested refunds due to these issues.
The primary problem seems to be frequent crashes related to the game's graphics controller, even on powerful PCs. A common error message indicates potential causes such as outdated drivers, excessively high in-game settings for the GPU, overheating, or a game-specific error.
Beyond crashes, other reported problems include malfunctioning DLSS and ray tracing features, lengthy loading times, missing textures, and audio glitches. Some players claim performance stutters after extended play sessions often precede a complete game crash, leading some to suspect a memory leak.
Nixxes, the porting studio, has acknowledged these issues on the Steam forums. They've directed users to their support website for troubleshooting guides, requesting logs and crash dumps to aid in faster diagnosis and resolution. Nixxes also addressed a specific bug impacting photo-op missions, suggesting that maintaining a framerate above 20 FPS may help avoid this issue. Lowering graphics settings or resolution is recommended as a workaround.
