Diablo 4 has kicked off Season 8, marking the beginning of a series of free updates that will lead into the game's second expansion, slated for release in 2026. However, the launch has not been met with universal acclaim from the game's dedicated player base, who are eager for substantial new features, gameplay reworks, and innovative ways to engage with the nearly two-year-old action role-playing game. These veteran fans, who meticulously craft meta builds and play regularly, have been vocal about their desire for Blizzard to introduce more thought-provoking content.
The release of Diablo 4's 2025 roadmap, the first of its kind from Blizzard for the game, sparked significant backlash within the community. Fans expressed concerns over the upcoming content, including Season 8, questioning whether it would be enough to maintain their interest. The roadmap's lack of detail about future updates fueled these concerns, prompting a community manager to step in on the Diablo 4 subreddit to reassure players: "We added fewer details to the later parts of the roadmap to accommodate for things the team is still working on. This isn't all that's coming in 2025 :)." Even former Blizzard Entertainment president and Microsoft corporate executive, Mike Ybarra, joined the conversation, adding his perspective to the ongoing debate.
Season 8 introduces several controversial changes, with the most notable being a significant overhaul of the battle pass to align more closely with the model used in Call of Duty. This new system allows players to unlock items in a non-linear fashion, but it also means that the battle pass now offers less virtual currency, making it harder for players to afford future passes.
In an in-depth interview with IGN, Diablo 4 lead live game designer Colin Finer and lead seasons designer Deric Nunez addressed the community's reaction to the roadmap. They confirmed plans to update the game's skill tree, a much-requested feature among players, and provided insight into the reasoning behind the changes to the battle pass.
