Hideo Kojima’s highly anticipated spiritual successor to *Metal Gear*, titled Physint, is still quite far from release. In a recent statement, Kojima confirmed that the game is “another five or six years” away from completion. This update comes directly from the visionary director himself, who shared the timeline during an interview with Le Film Francais. He also noted that his long-held ambition of directing a film remains on hold until after the completion of his first independent “action espionage” title since his well-documented departure from Konami in 2015.
"I've had so many offers since I left Konami, with serious conditions to develop games in my independent studio," Kojima explained, as translated by ResetEra user Red Kong XIX. "Besides Death Stranding 2, there's also Physint in development. That will take me another five or six years."
He continued, expressing interest in eventually pursuing filmmaking. "I grew up with cinema. Directing would be, in a way, a tribute to it. Also, I'm getting older, and I'd prefer to do it while I'm still young!"
The PlayStation Studios reveal of Physint originally took place back in January 2024 under the leadership of Herman Hulst. Since then, however, official updates have been minimal. At the time of its announcement, Kojima hinted at a cinematic direction for the project, later clarifying via X/Twitter that the experience would blend elements like “look, story, theme, cast, acting, fashion, sound, etc.” into what he describes as the next level of ‘Digital Entertainment’—something immersive enough to be called a “movie.”
This ambitious title is just one of several ongoing ventures within Kojima Productions. Alongside Death Stranding 2 and the mysterious new IP OD, which is being developed in collaboration with Xbox Game Studios and features Hunter Schafer and Jordan Peele, Kojima is also involved in A24’s upcoming film adaptation of the original *Death Stranding*.
In related news, Death Stranding 2: On The Beach is scheduled for release on June 26, and series lead Norman Reedus recently dropped a hint about the movie adaptation in an interview with IGN. When asked if he’d reprise his role, he simply replied: "Of course, I would play myself in the movie."
Adding to the intrigue, Kojima recently revealed some of his unused creative concepts—including a unique idea for a ‘Forgetting Game’ where players lose key abilities and memories the longer they stay away from the game. In a particularly emotional moment, he also shared that he has left his team a USB stick containing unexplored game ideas, meant to serve as creative inspiration even after his passing.
