Free-to-play 3v3 shooter Spectre Divide is shutting down just six months after its September 2024 debut, mere weeks following its PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S release. Developer Mountaintop Studios will also cease operations.
Mountaintop CEO Nate Mitchell confirmed the closure in an official statement posted on social media today.
"Despite our hopes, Season 1's launch failed to reach the necessary success to maintain the game and keep Mountaintop operational," the statement explains.

Initial optimism followed the game's first week, with reports of approximately 400,000 players and peak concurrent numbers reaching 10,000 across all platforms.
"However, over time we failed to sustain sufficient player engagement and revenue to cover Spectre's operational costs and studio expenses," the statement continued. "We exhausted our remaining capital since the PC launch, but ultimately couldn't secure additional funding."
"We explored every possible solution - seeking publishers, investors, or potential acquisitions. Unfortunately, nothing materialized. The current industry climate proved particularly challenging."
Spectre Divide servers will go offline within 30 days, with all player purchases made during Season 1 receiving refunds.
This announcement contradicts October 2024 statements where Mitchell assured players Mountaintop possessed "sufficient funding to support Spectre long-term" and that "servers would remain operational with continued updates."
IGN's August 2024 preview highlighted Spectre Divide's innovative Duality system, praising the tactical shooter's unique dual-character control mechanics. The abrupt closure follows recent high-profile live-service failures including Rocksteady's Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and Sony's Concord.
