SAG-AFTRA's Strike Against Video Game Giants: A Fight for AI Protections

SAG-AFTRA, the actors' and broadcasters' union, has launched a strike against major video game companies, including Activision and Electronic Arts, citing concerns over the misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) and inadequate compensation. This action, effective July 26th, follows over a year of stalled negotiations.

SAG-AFTRA Strike: AI Concerns

The core issue is the unchecked use of AI in the video game industry. While not opposing AI technology itself, SAG-AFTRA members are deeply worried about the potential for AI to replace human actors, replicating voices and likenesses without consent. This includes the threat to smaller roles, crucial stepping stones for aspiring performers. Furthermore, ethical concerns arise when AI-generated content clashes with an actor's personal values.

SAG-AFTRA Strike: Key Demands

To address these concerns, and others, SAG-AFTRA has developed alternative agreements. The Tiered-Budget Independent Interactive Media Agreement (I-IMA) caters to smaller-budget projects ($250,000 - $30 million), offering tiered rates and incorporating AI protections previously rejected by the industry. This builds on a January side deal with AI voice company Replica Studios, allowing actors to license their voice replicas under specific, opt-out conditions.

SAG-AFTRA Strike: Interim Agreements

Additionally, the Interim Interactive Media Agreement and Interim Interactive Localization Agreement offer temporary solutions covering various aspects including compensation, AI usage, rest periods, and payment terms. Crucially, projects under these agreements are exempt from the strike, allowing some work to continue. These interim agreements, however, exclude expansion packs and DLC released post-launch.

Negotiations began in October 2022, culminating in a near-unanimous (98.32%) strike authorization vote by SAG-AFTRA members in September 2023. While progress was made on some fronts, the lack of strong AI protections remains the primary obstacle. Union leadership, including President Fran Drescher and National Executive Director Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, have emphasized the industry's significant profits and the actors' vital role in creating memorable game characters.
