Summary
- Unlike its predecessor, Elden Ring Nightreign will not feature an in-game messaging system.
- FromSoftware cites a lack of time for players to read and write messages in Nightreign's faster-paced gameplay as the reason for this omission.
- Other asynchronous features from Elden Ring, however, will be retained and enhanced in Nightreign.
Elden Ring Nightreign will not allow players to leave messages for each other, a senior FromSoftware official has confirmed. This decision to remove the signature feature is described as a practical one.
The asynchronous messaging system, a hallmark of FromSoftware games, has fostered significant player engagement, contributing significantly to the Soulsborne experience. Players utilize it for assistance, playful misdirection, or humorous commentary.
However, this popular feature will be absent from Elden Ring Nightreign. Game director Junya Ishizaki, in a January 3rd interview with IGN Japan, explained that the game's multiplayer-focused design and shorter play sessions wouldn't accommodate the messaging system. Nightreign's anticipated shorter play sessions of approximately 40 minutes each, compared to the often hours-long sessions of Elden Ring, necessitate a more streamlined experience.
Nightreign Retains Other Asynchronous Features
While Elden Ring sessions could extend for hours, Nightreign anticipates significantly shorter play intervals. This intensified experience led to the removal of the messaging system to maintain a better pace.
This doesn't mean all asynchronous features are gone. The bloodstain mechanic returns, enhanced to allow players to not only see how others perished but also loot their fallen forms.
FromSoftware Aims for a 'Compressed' Elden Ring Nightreign
Removing the messaging system aligns with FromSoftware's vision for a more intense and multiplayer-focused experience. The three-day structure of Nightreign also reflects this ambition. Ishizaki stated FromSoftware aims for "a compressed RPG" with high variety and minimal downtime.
Elden Ring Nightreign's reveal trailer at TGA 2024 targeted a 2025 release, though a more precise window remains unannounced by FromSoftware and Bandai Namco.
