Warner Bros. Discovery has revealed it will rebrand Max back to HBO Max starting this summer.
The unexpected name reversal comes just two years after HBO Max was renamed to Max. The soon-to-be HBO-Max-again streaming service hosts premium content including Game of Thrones, The White Lotus, The Sopranos, The Last of Us, House of the Dragon, and the upcoming The Penguin series.
WBD announced its streaming division has achieved nearly $3 billion in profitability improvements over these two years while expanding globally with 22 million new subscribers in the past year. The company projects hitting 150+ million subscribers by 2026's end.
"Our streaming turnaround reflects strategic content prioritization—focusing on HBO's prestige programming, major film releases, docuseries, standout reality shows, and Max originals while deprioritizing less engaging genres," explained company executives.
The HBO Premium Promise
Why revert to HBO Max? Research confirms audiences associate the HBO brand with premium, must-have content—exactly what subscribers want when drowning in streaming options.
"Today's viewers don't want more content—they demand better content," noted WBD. "While competitors flood the market with quantity, WBD stakes its claim on distinctive quality storytelling. No brand has delivered this more consistently than HBO across 50+ years."
The rebrand reinforces WBD's commitment to strategic agility, using consumer insights to refine its market position. "Reincorporating HBO into our streaming identity will magnify subscribers' expectation of excellence while demonstrating our willingness to evolve," the statement continued.

Leadership Perspectives
David Zaslav, WBD President and CEO, emphasized: "Our streaming growth stems from programming quality. Reinstating HBO—the gold standard in media—will accelerate this momentum."
JB Perrette, Streaming CEO, added: "We'll maintain focus on distinctive, adult and family-oriented programming. Our content simply stands apart—that's not subjective, it's measurable."
Casey Bloys, HBO/Max Content Chairman, concluded: "HBO Max better reflects our current value proposition. It reaffirms our promise to deliver uniquely worthwhile content—to borrow HBO's classic line, content worth paying for."
