MachineGames, the creators of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, have confirmed a significant gameplay detail: players will be unable to harm dogs within the game. This decision marks a departure from the studio's previous titles, such as the Wolfenstein series, which often featured violent encounters with animals.
A Dog-Friendly Indiana Jones
In an interview with IGN, Creative Director Jens Andersson explained the reasoning behind this choice. He stated, "Indiana Jones is a dog person." While the game retains the series' characteristic action and combat against human enemies, the developers have prioritized a family-friendly approach, ensuring interactions with canine characters avoid any harm. Andersson elaborated, "It’s a family-friendly IP in many ways...We have dogs as enemies, but you don’t really hurt the dogs. You scare them away."
This commitment to animal welfare contrasts with the depiction of animal violence in other games. Titles like Wolfenstein and Resident Evil 4 frequently involve eliminating animals as part of the gameplay. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle aims to provide a different experience.
Gameplay and Release Details
Set in 1937, between Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade, the game follows Indy's pursuit of stolen artifacts from Marshall College. His journey takes him across diverse locations, from the Vatican and Egyptian pyramids to the underwater temples of Sukhothai. Indy's trusty whip serves as both a traversal tool and a weapon, allowing him to disarm and subdue human foes in open-world-inspired environments.
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle launches December 9th on Xbox Series X|S and PC. A PS5 release is anticipated in Spring 2025. Rest assured, dog lovers, Indy's whip will remain dog-free in this adventure.
