Reports indicate that nearly all third-party physical Nintendo Switch 2 games in Japan—and likely in the West—will be distributed as Game-Key Cards requiring online downloads rather than containing full game data.
As Gematsu reported, Japanese pre-orders for Switch 2 titles show that all third-party physical releases—except for CD Projekt's Cyberpunk 2077 non-Switch 2 Edition—ship as Game-Key Cards requiring internet access for full game downloads.
Ys X: Proud Nordics and No Sleep for Kaname Date are also game-key cards in Japan. And retail descriptions for Split Fiction list it as a code-in-a-box. pic.twitter.com/dCTUsTmNQZ

The trend appears similar in Western markets. Sega's Switch 2 lineup, including Sonic X Shadow Generations (as confirmed by Walmart listings), uses Game-Key Cards. Only four known third-party exceptions exist:
- Cyberpunk 2077
- Daemon X Machina: Titanic Scion (Nintendo Switch 2 Edition)
- Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma (Nintendo Switch 2 Edition)
- No Sleep For Kaname Date - From AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES Aiba Edition
Nintendo previously clarified that while some Switch 2 game cards contain only download keys, "Switch 2 Edition" games include both the base game and upgrades on the cartridge.

Game-Key Cards function as physical download codes with no on-card game data—players must connect online to install titles. Retail packaging clearly labels these products with front-box warnings. Examples include Street Fighter 6 and the Bravely Default remaster, while first-party titles like Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza contain full games. Notably, the 64GB Cyberpunk 2077 ships on cartridge.

Niko Partners' Daniel Ahmad warns this distribution model could strain Nintendo's eShop servers during the June 5 launch window:
All the Switch 2 bundles come with a download code.

Mario Kart World is 24GB.
Most games come on a game key card and require a download.
The Switch 2 launches globally on the same day.
I am not a religious man, but I ask you all to pray for the Eshop servers on June 5.
Ahmad explains the publisher rationale: "Game cards are significantly more expensive than discs (+ increases with each GB)... Digital games/lower capacity cards offer higher margins." He notes digital sales already dominate the market.
Game Business editor Christopher Dring likened Game-Key Cards to "Christmas/birthday present boxes," suggesting shrinking retail presence, manufacturing costs, generational preferences, and sustainability concerns are accelerating physical media's decline.
Pre-orders for Switch 2 sold out rapidly after opening April 24, prompting fans to flood eBay with fake listings to combat scalpers.
