Doom: The Dark Ages – A Return to Roots
Following the critically acclaimed Doom (2016) and Doom Eternal (2020), id Software is shifting gears with Doom: The Dark Ages, a prequel that returns to the franchise's core gameplay mechanics. Instead of the platforming elements featured in Eternal, The Dark Ages emphasizes intense, close-quarters combat with a focus on powerful melee weapons.
While the iconic Doom weaponry returns, including the skull-crushing new addition showcased in the reveal trailer, the prequel heavily features three melee options: an electrified gauntlet, a flail, and the Shield Saw. Game director Hugo Martin describes the combat as "stand and fight," emphasizing strategic positioning and aggressive melee tactics.
Inspiration for The Dark Ages draws from the original Doom, Frank Miller's Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, and Zack Snyder's 300. This influence is evident in the game's design, featuring large-scale combat encounters reminiscent of the iconic movie and the original game. The Glory Kill system has been reimagined, allowing for dynamic finishing moves from any angle. Levels are designed for exploration and offer non-linear progression, with an approximate one-hour playtime for each.
Addressing feedback on Doom Eternal, The Dark Ages presents its narrative through cutscenes rather than in-game codex entries. The story promises a large-scale adventure, described as a "summer blockbuster event," focusing on the Slayer's power and the threats it attracts. Controls have been simplified for a more intuitive experience, and the game's economy is streamlined to a single currency. Secrets and hidden rewards focus on gameplay enhancements rather than lore.
Difficulty is customizable via in-game sliders, allowing players to adjust various aspects, including game speed and enemy aggression.
The giant Atlan mech and cybernetic dragon riding sequences, highlighted in the reveal trailer, are not isolated events but feature unique abilities and mini-bosses. Importantly, The Dark Ages will not include a multiplayer mode, allowing the developers to concentrate on delivering a compelling single-player experience.
Martin's focus on returning to the core principles of the original Doom while still offering a fresh experience is a key element of The Dark Ages. The game aims to deliver a powerful and classic Doom experience, redefining the power fantasy while staying true to its roots. The game's release date is set for May 15th.
