Rebel Wolves, a studio comprised of former CD Projekt Red developers, unveiled a cinematic trailer for their debut title, The Blood of Dawnwalker. This open-world RPG, reminiscent of The Witcher, plunges players into a dark fantasy setting where morally gray choices abound and an outcast protagonist, Coen, takes center stage.
The recently released trailer, a blend of pre-rendered and gameplay footage, emphasizes the game's Witcher-esque qualities, further enhanced by the integration of Persona-style time management mechanics. Initially announced as Dawnwalker in January 2024, the game was officially revealed as The Blood of Dawnwalker on January 13, 2025, during a reveal stream hosted by Rebel Wolves and Bandai Namco. The over four-and-a-half-minute trailer introduces the Dawnwalkers – powerful beings akin to vampires – and sets the stage for Coen's transformation into one.
The Blood of Dawnwalker's Witcher Influences
The game's dark fantasy backdrop, monstrous creatures, and emphasis on morally ambiguous choices strongly evoke the Witcher series. The tagline, "the world needs what it fears," further solidifies this connection. Fans of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt's Blood and Wine expansion, with its vampire-centric storyline and challenging moral dilemmas, will find much to appreciate. The game's morality system allows players to shape Coen's destiny, choosing between embracing his Dawnwalker powers to save his family or clinging to his humanity.
Persona-Inspired Time Management
Beyond its Witcher similarities, The Blood of Dawnwalker introduces a unique twist: Persona-inspired time management. Every quest consumes time, forcing players to prioritize their actions. As Rebel Wolves co-founder and game director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz explains, "There are multiple approaches to saving Coen’s family with no clear division between main and side quests; you decide on how you spend the time." This "narrative sandbox" design, where completing all quests in a single playthrough is impossible, fosters replayability and ensures each experience is unique.
Currently in development for PC and current-gen consoles (PlayStation and Xbox), The Blood of Dawnwalker is planned as the first installment in a trilogy and will be published by Bandai Namco. While a release date remains unconfirmed, given its 2022 development start and AAA budget, a 2027 release or later seems plausible. A gameplay reveal is promised for Summer 2025.
