Chess Enters the Esports Arena: A Historic Moment at EWC 2025
The Esports World Cup (EWC) 2025 tournament is making headlines with an unexpected addition: chess! This ancient game joins the ranks of esports, marking a significant milestone in its history. Let's explore this exciting development.
Chess Officially Recognized as an Esport
The EWC, the world's premier gaming and esports festival, will feature competitive chess for the very first time in 2025. This groundbreaking inclusion is the result of a major collaboration between Chess.com, chess Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen, and the Esports World Cup Foundation (EWCF). This partnership aims to introduce the classic game to a broader, more mainstream audience.
EWCF CEO Ralf Reichert expressed his excitement, calling chess "the mother of all strategy games." He emphasized that chess's rich history, global appeal, and vibrant competitive scene align perfectly with the EWC's mission to unite popular games and their communities.
World champion and top-ranked player Magnus Carlsen will serve as an ambassador, aiming to connect chess with a wider audience. He stated, "This partnership offers an incredible opportunity to grow the game, introducing chess to new audiences and inspiring future players."
Riyadh, Saudi Arabia: The Stage for Chess Esports Debut
The EWC 2025 will take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from July 31st to August 3rd, 2025. Top chess players from around the world will compete for a substantial $1.5 million USD prize pool.
Qualification will involve the 2025 Champions Chess Tour (CCT), held in February and May. The top 12 players from the CCT, along with four from a "Last Chance Qualifier," will secure a spot in the EWC, vying for a $300,000 USD prize pool and the honor of participating in chess's inaugural esports appearance.
To enhance the appeal to esports fans, the 2025 CCT will feature a new match format. Instead of the traditional 90-minute time control, games will be played with a 10-minute time limit and no increment. Tiebreakers will utilize a single Armageddon game.
Chess, with roots tracing back 1500 years to ancient India, has captivated players for centuries. Its digital adaptation, particularly through platforms like Chess.com, has broadened its reach, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. The game's popularity has also been boosted by streaming platforms, influencers, and shows like "The Queen's Gambit."
With its official recognition as an esport, chess is poised for even greater growth and engagement.
