Sandfall Interactive recently unveiled crucial details about Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 during Xbox's Developer Direct, including the release date, character roster, and innovative combat system. Let's delve into the exciting announcements!
Unveiling the Mystery: April 24, 2025 Launch
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, set in a Belle Epoque France-inspired fantasy world, will launch on April 24, 2025. This announcement, made during the Xbox Developer Direct, confirmed the game's arrival on Xbox Game Pass on day one.
Pre-orders are now open: $44.99 for the standard edition and $59.99 for the Deluxe Edition on the Xbox Store. Steam and PS5 players enjoy a 10% discount ($44.99 and $53.99 respectively), though the PS5 discount requires a PlayStation Plus subscription and ends at 3:00 PM (local time) on release day. The Steam discount concludes on May 2, 2025. An Epic Games Store listing is currently available for wishlisting only.
New Faces Join the Expedition: Monoco and Esquie
The full cast of seven playable characters (plus one dedicated to exploration) has been revealed, including newcomers Monoco and Esquie.
Monoco, a Gestral, is described as "friendly and bloodthirsty," able to transform into defeated enemies, adding a unique tactical dimension to combat. Gestrals are notably immune to the Paintress's power.
Esquie, a legendary figure considered the oldest and strongest being, plays a supporting role, granting access to various locations on the open-world map. Collecting his special stones unlocks new abilities and areas.
The remaining characters – Gustave, Lune, Maelle, Sciel, Renoir, and Verso – were previously showcased in a YouTube video on October 16, 2024.
Reactive Turn-Based Combat and Deep Character Customization
Sandfall Interactive emphasizes a reinvention of classic turn-based RPG combat, blending real-time elements. A "reactive turn-based system" allows for parrying and dodging enemy attacks, enhancing damage output with precise timing. Difficulty settings adjust the timing window for accessibility.
Deep character customization is a core feature. Each character boasts unique mechanics and skill trees, such as Lune's "Stain" accumulation for ability enhancement. "Pictos," equipment modifiers, evolve into permanent Luminas (passive effects) after four battles, offering extensive build variety. Hundreds of builds are possible through Luminas, skills, and abilities, promising a highly replayable experience.
