Sucker Punch Productions aims to address a common criticism leveled at its 2020 hit, Ghost of Tsushima, with its upcoming sequel, Ghost of Yotei. The developer explicitly plans to mitigate the repetitive nature of the open-world gameplay that characterized its predecessor.

Addressing Repetitive Gameplay in Ghost of Tsushima
In a recent interview with the New York Times, Sucker Punch revealed key details about Ghost of Yotei, focusing on its new protagonist, Atsu, and a significantly improved open-world experience. Creative Director Jason Connell stated, "One challenge with open-world games is repetitive gameplay. We aimed to counter that, offering diverse experiences." He also confirmed the inclusion of firearms alongside the traditional katana combat.
While Ghost of Tsushima boasts an 83 Metacritic score, reviews often highlighted repetitive gameplay. Critics described it as "a competent but shallow...attempt to replicate Assassin’s Creed," suggesting a more focused design would have been beneficial. Player feedback echoed this sentiment, with many citing repetitive enemy encounters and mission structures.
Sucker Punch acknowledges these criticisms, aiming to avoid similar pitfalls with Ghost of Yotei. Creative Director Nate Fox emphasized the importance of retaining the series' core identity: "What is the DNA of a Ghost game? Transporting players to the beauty of feudal Japan."
The developers are focusing on enhancing the cinematic experience and visuals while simultaneously addressing the repetitive gameplay concerns. As stated by Sucker Punch Sr. Communications Manager Andrew Goldfarb in a PlayStation blog post, Ghost of Yotei, launching on PS5 in 2025 (announced at State of Play September 2024), will offer players "the freedom to explore" Mount Yotei at their own pace.
