While eagerly awaiting the release of DOOM: The Dark Ages, many players are revisiting the classic DOOM and DOOM II. The developers have recently resumed work on these titles, delivering a significant update.
This update significantly improves the technical aspects of DOOM and DOOM II, but the enhancements go beyond mere technical fixes. Crucially, support for multiplayer modifications has been added. For compatibility, mods must be created using Vanilla DOOM, DeHackEd, MBF21, or BOOM. Cooperative gameplay now allows all players to collect items simultaneously. A new observer mode has been implemented for players who have died while waiting for revival in cooperative mode. The multiplayer network code has also been optimized. Finally, the mod loader can now handle more than the initial 100+ subscribed mods.
Looking ahead to DOOM: The Dark Ages, players will have the ability to adjust demon aggression within the game's settings. Accessibility is a core focus of the development process. DOOM: The Dark Ages will offer a significantly higher degree of customization than previous id Software titles. Executive producer Marty Stratton emphasizes the team's commitment to making the game accessible to a broad audience.
Players will be able to customize enemy damage and difficulty, projectile speed and damage, and other elements such as game tempo, aggression levels, and parry timing. Stratton also confirmed that prior experience with DOOM: The Dark Ages is not required to understand the narratives of DOOM: The Dark Ages or DOOM: Eternal.
