Death Stranding 2's overwhelmingly positive early reception has left creator Hideo Kojima unexpectedly anxious. Discover why the visionary developer questions such immediate acclaim and his unconventional plans for preserving his creative legacy.
Death Stranding 2 Early Praises Have Hideo Kojima Concerned
Kojima Worries DS2 Might Just Be Another "Blockbuster"

The universal praise for Death Stranding 2: On the Beach has surprisingly unsettled director Hideo Kojima. During a June 12 interview with Game Informer, the legendary developer revealed his reservations about the game's immediate popularity.
Kojima aspires to create enduring works that remain relevant decades later, noting that truly innovative art often faces initial skepticism. He explained, "Masterpieces that stand the test of time always introduce something revolutionary - and most aren't immediately embraced. It takes 20-30 years before people appreciate their genius."

This philosophy guided his approach to the original Death Stranding, drawing parallels to Metal Gear's decade-long journey to recognition. However, DS2's warm reception contrasts sharply with this expectation.
"During testing, everyone enjoyed Death Stranding 2 more than anticipated," Kojima admitted. "While gratifying, this makes me question whether we've created another disposable blockbuster rather than lasting art." His ambition extends beyond commercial success to inspiring future creators.
Kojima Wants to Inspire Other Creators Rather Than Passing the "Baton"

Regarding his creative inheritance, Kojima rejects conventional succession plans. In a June 10 GQ Magazine interview, he stated: "I won't be passing any batons. Better to break it entirely... The goal isn't cloning 'Hideo Kojima' but igniting creative sparks in others."

Despite this philosophy, Kojima has implemented contingency measures. As revealed in Edge Magazine (May 15), he's entrusted his team with a USB drive containing unpublished concepts, ensuring Kojima Productions' future.
"After a serious health scare during COVID and approaching 60, I recognized the need for continuity," Kojima explained. The archive prevents his studio from becoming merely an IP caretaker following his eventual departure.

Fans can rest assured Kojima remains actively involved in multiple projects including DS2, PlayStation's Physint, and Xbox's OD.
