Unfrozen Studio, the developers behind Heroes of Might & Magic: Olden Era, have unveiled further details about the intriguing Swarm faction, following an initial teaser. They've detailed the faction's design inspiration, the evolution of the concept from "Inferno" to "Swarm," and the unfolding narrative on the continent of Jadame.
The Swarm's defining characteristic is its adaptability. Certain creatures possess abilities directly influenced by enemy unit levels; the greater the disparity, the more potent the damage. Others, like mantises, boast a unique tactical element, selecting from three abilities each round. A notable survival mechanism involves the consumption of corpses for healing and enhancement – a skill mirrored by Swarm heroes.
In Olden Era, the insectoid race, previously only briefly mentioned in Might & Magic 8, assumes the mantle of the demonic threat. While respectful of existing lore, the developers have infused the Swarm with elements of body horror and occultism, transforming them from a simple insect colony into a devoted cult under a singular overlord. Each member is integrated into a vast collective consciousness, existing solely to serve their master's will.
Gameplay revolves around a "mono-faction" mechanic, rewarding players who utilize exclusively Swarm units due to their synergistic enhancements. Swarm units can summon cocoons, whose health scales with army size. Upon hatching, these larvae provide temporary reinforcements, allowing for dynamic battlefield adaptation.
The Swarm's aggressive, confrontation-focused playstyle is emphasized by its corpse-devouring healing and empowerment abilities, coupled with enemy-strength-dependent unique skills. This innovative approach promises a refreshing combat strategy.
